1934: Driving test introduced
1935: 30mph speed limit established for towns and villages

1983: Regulations on the wearing of Seat belts by drivers and front seat passengers come into force under the Transport Act 1981
1989: It becomes compulsory for children to wear rear Seat belts
1991: Rear seat belt regulations are extended to adults
2000: Tomorow's Roads published setting 2010 targets for road safety
2003: Hazard perception test added to driving test
2003: It becomes illegal to drive while using a hand-held mobile phone
